Dear Golfers

Golf, like any sport, has its unique challenges. Not being a golfer myself, I am always amazed at how this sport in particular humbles even the most talented of individuals. Just as in life, the challenges and pitfalls of this game tend to catch one by surprise.

In as much as one plays golf as part of a team, this is very much a game played against one’s own limitations. The handicap system gives it some semblance of fairness when compared to the performance of others but it is really the challenge of improving one’s own score that makes it interesting.

I was once told that an analogy of how to model a perfect business environment, is to emulate the game of golf. The thing with golf is that it is so motivational that people will take their hard earned money, and in what free time they can muster, they educate themselves, buy the tools of the trade and play this sport. Therein lies the “secret” that would add value to any corporate environment.

The rules are clear and transparent, the objective is quite obvious and the feedback on one’s achievement is almost instantaneous. On the other hand, we often ask employees to perform by giving them a “club” and ask them to hit the ball as hard as possible in a particular direction and then they must continue this time and time again for as many times in the day as they can without telling them their score! Then when feedback is given, we do it infrequently and generally share the bad news, i.e. when we are in the “rough” or have not made the “cut”.

So the moral of this story is that if we could model our businesses a little more around the important aspects of a golf game we would have happier and more motivated employees.

We at Multotec are always trying to improve our customer’s experience and thus value the feedback we can get from you. We have generally tried to model our business on our customers’ needs. The Multotec you see today will not necessarily be the one you see tomorrow, based on what the market requirements are in the future.
